How neurofeedback works
Teaching your brain to self-regulate.
Your brain’s electrical activity is like music playing so softly you can’t hear it. Neurofeedback (sometimes called EEG biofeedback) acts as an amplifier, so your brain can finally “hear” itself and learn more balanced patterns. It’s gentle, noninvasive brain training.

Two ways your brain communicates
Chemical
Messengers like serotonin and dopamine. This is where medications work.
Electrical
Rhythms of activity we call brainwaves. This is where neurofeedback works.
The feedback loop, step by step
Neurofeedback creates a communication loop your brain doesn’t normally have: it measures what your brain is doing, then sends that information right back.
1. Listen
Sensors on your scalp pick up your brain’s very faint electrical signals. Nothing is sent into your brain.
2. Amplify
An amplifier turns up the volume so software can see your brainwave patterns in real time.
3. Reward
Whenever your brain produces more balanced activity, the screen brightens and grows or the music gets louder.
4. Learn
Your brain connects the activity with the reward and starts producing it more often, in sessions and in daily life.
This kind of learning is called operant conditioning: when an action is followed by a reward, it becomes more likely to happen again. Here, the action is your brain’s own activity.
Your path with Holly
From first call to feeling the difference
Step 1: Free consultation
15 minutes to talk about what’s going on and whether neurofeedback fits.
Step 2: Goals & history
We map out your symptoms, history, and what you’d like to feel different.
Step 3: Training sessions
Neurofeedback alongside your talk therapy, tailored with the Othmer approach, at no extra cost.
Step 4: Track & adjust
We check in on sleep, focus, and mood, and fine-tune the plan as you go.
Neurofeedback may help with
Neurofeedback isn’t aimed at one diagnosis. It trains your whole brain toward balance and better communication with itself, which is why changes can show up in many areas at once. For children, adolescents, and adults.
Neurofeedback questions
Does neurofeedback cost extra?
No. It’s included with your counseling at no additional cost. Holly strongly recommends it alongside talk therapy, and choosing talk therapy alone is always an option.
Does it hurt or send electricity into the brain?
No. The sensors only read activity. You sit and relax while you watch or listen.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on your goals and how you respond, so there isn’t a single answer. We’ll talk it through together.
Research shows that most people notice their first positive effects after 6–10 sessions, and many people have lasting changes after 26–28 sessions. However, each brain and nervous system is unique, so results cannot be guaranteed.
Can I do neurofeedback online?
No. Neurofeedback is in person, since the sensors are applied in the office. Talk therapy is also available by telehealth.
Is it for kids too?
Yes. Holly works with children, adolescents, and adults.
Results vary from person to person, and neurofeedback does not replace medical care. Never change a medication without talking to your prescriber.
Curious whether neurofeedback could help you?
Starting is just a conversation. Share a little about what's bringing you in, and go from there.
